1.0 Personal Information Defined

Personal Information is information about an identifiable individual and includes information that relates to their personal characteristics (e.g., gender, age, income, home address, or phone number, family status), health (e.g., disabilities affecting mobility), or activities and views (e.g., religion, politics, an opinion, or evaluation of an individual). Personal information is to be contrasted with business information (e.g., an individual's business address and telephone number), which is not protected by privacy legislation.

2.0 AMB Architects

AMB Architects provides architectural services to a wide variety of clients. We work with several consultants and agencies that may have limited access to personal information in the course of their duties. These may include information technology consultants, office security and maintenance personnel, accountants, insurers, credit card companies, landlords, and lawyers. We restrict their access to any personal information we hold to the greatest extent possible. We also ensure that they adhere to appropriate privacy principles.

3.0 Why We Collect Personal Information

3.1 Clients

Similar to most architects, we collect, use, and disclose personal information about our clients to provide appropriate architectural services. The primary purpose of collecting personal information from our clients is to offer architectural services. In the case of individual clients, we collect information about their design criteria, intended uses, financial situation, and, for residential projects, family circumstances, enabling us to provide suitable advice.

3.2 Third Parties

A second primary purpose may involve collecting personal information from third parties (e.g., neighbors) regarding a client's architectural plans. This allows us to assess how the views of third parties may impact our client's architectural options.

3.3 Home Contact Information

A third primary purpose is to obtain home contact information to facilitate private or emergency communication with the client.

3.4 Exceptions

While it is rare for us to collect personal information without the client's express consent, certain circumstances may warrant such collection. For example, in urgent situations where the client is unavailable, or when we believe the client would provide consent if asked but obtaining consent is impractical (e.g., a family member knowledgeable about the project provides additional information).
